Ethical issues in the use of telecare
Publication date: 7 July 2010
The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) has published a report on Ethical Issues in the use of Telecare.
The report suggests that while telecare offers great benefits for individual users including safety and independence, it also has the potential to threaten users’ privacy, autonomy and control. It claims that social care and health professionals need to consider these ethical issues when supporting an individual in deciding whether to use telecare.
SCIE has also added two new videos on telecare to its online Social Care TV channel. The first film uses case studies of people using telecare to meet their support needs, showing how it has helped to maintain people’s independence and reduce their reliance on formal and informal carers. The second film considers ethical issues around the use of telecare.
